Phuket Legal Firm
Foreign Income Tax for Expats
Phuket Legal Firm has particular expertise in Thai tax matters for foreign nationals receiving income from abroad. We help expats, retirees and international clients understand their position, review the relevant documents and prepare for Thai personal income tax filing and payment where required.
When Foreign Income May Be Taxable in Thailand
Under published Revenue Department guidance, Thai tax residence generally involves presence in Thailand totalling at least 180 days in a calendar year. Foreign-source income arising from 1 January 2024 while the individual is Thai tax resident may be assessable when brought into Thailand, including in a later year. Income earned before that date, non-resident years, statutory exemptions and treaty provisions require separate review. Nationality or a visa label alone does not settle the tax position.
Our review distinguishes the year income arose from the year it was transferred. Send the full chronology rather than only the latest Thai bank statement. General website information cannot determine the liability on a particular transfer.
Foreign Pensions and Other Income
Pensions, dividends, interest, rental income, investment disposals and business or employment earnings can raise different questions. We review the actual payment, the source country and the relevant documents before applying a tax treatment. Overseas employer or bank details alone do not establish the source of income; work carried out in Thailand also needs review.
Double Taxation Agreements and Foreign Tax Credits
A relevant Double Taxation Agreement may affect taxing rights or provide relief. Foreign income tax already paid may qualify for a credit subject to treaty rules, documentation and a limit linked to Thai tax on that income.
Relief is not automatic and may differ by country and income category.
We review foreign returns, tax certificates and payment evidence together with the Thai calculation. Tell us about any pending foreign assessment or refund and whether another adviser is handling your overseas tax affairs, so the agreed work can be coordinated.

Our Consultation Process
Initial enquiry → review of tax years, countries and deadlines → document request → consultation and agreed scope → calculations and filing support.
We explain what is included and identify records or further advice needed before proceeding. Do not assume that a filing deadline is protected until the firm confirms acceptance of responsibility.
Discuss Your Foreign Income Tax Position
Tell us the relevant tax years, approximate days spent in Thailand, income types, source countries, remittances and any tax notice or filing deadline. Please provide a brief overview first; our team will advise how to send financial records securely.
